Beta Magic

The dose of lutein depends on your age and state of physical health, and other factors. There are no risks associated with high daily intake, except for tan skin, which occurs with all carotenoids.

Carotenoids are pigments or colors. Combine together to form all the colors of the rainbow.

Beta-carotene, the main carotenoid found in carrots, is a red-orange pigment. Zeaxanthin, which is almost identical at the molecular level for lutein, is a color bright orange yellow. Lycopene is bright red.

All of the carotenoids are important for eye health and visual acuity. Night blindness is usually caused by a lack of beta-carotene and other carotenoids in the diet.

Beta-carotene is converted in the body into vitamin A, an essential nutrient. The deficiencies are common in developing countries and can lead to total blindness. Hundreds of thousands of malnourished children go blind each year due to lack of common vitamin.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are found within the retina of the eye. The retina is a light-gathering mechanism that connects directly to the optic nerve.

It is believed that a dose of lutein daily supports the health of the retina and reduces the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The macula is a sensitive part of the retina, responsible central vision. AMD is the most common cause of blindness or partial blindness in the elderly.

Most sources recommend supplements that contain a mixed carotenoids. But how much is enough? That's the question that most people want to know.

Ideally, all would be diet rich in fruits nutritious vegetables in a variety of colors, thereby avoiding the need for supplementation. However, food preferences aside, fruits and vegetables simply are not as nutritious as before. In addition, lutein and zeaxanthin are the micronutrients. They are present in foods in very small quantities in the best of situations.

Lutein find the right dosage is complicated by the fact that it is not considered an essential nutrient, like vitamin A (beta-carotene " generally recommended as a supplement to prevent vitamin A deficiency, since too much vitamin A from animal origin can be toxic.) So far, no daily allowance Recommended micronutrient. However, some health experts, particularly in the field of ophthalmology, have made recommendations.

A dose of 10 mg of lutein should be enough for a child or young person who does not have any eye disease. For an adult, 50 mg, in combination with 6-10mg of zeaxanthin is recommended for help reduce the risk of age AMRD and other eye diseases.

If you're considering supplementation, for the first time, look for one that contains lycopene, beta-carotene and mixed carotenoids and other micronutrients. We may not know exactly what the optimum intake is still, but it is logical think that many of us are not getting enough, because diseases like AMRD are so common.

The best of several nutritional supplements contain a dose 50-lutein. That's what I take every day.
