Although not a common problem, about 3 in 1,000 people suffer from a disease known as familial advanced sleep-phase syndrome phase (FASPS), which is a problem gene that causes a change in the normal sleep pattern so that, in extreme cases, the victims, who are often referred to as 'early risers' will remain asleep in the afternoon and then wake up again in the very early morning hours.
The condition is caused by a mutation in the period of 2 (or Per2) gene clock which is typically caused by an enzyme produced in response to light and acts to Reset the body's internal clock. In its mutated form of yet this does not answer its enzyme activation and therefore not in turn act to restore the body clock. The power of this gene has been recently demonstrated by transplanting mutation clock Period 2 gene in mice and found that the mice awoke four to six hours earlier than normal and so went to sleep four to six hours before.
Very little is known about the human clock or clocks, as it is probably more accurate to say that a number of systems responsible for controlling the daily rhythm of body. It is known however that light plays an important role in sleep / wake cycle, and that light falling on the retina of the eye, for example, causes a chain reaction releasing control of chemicals in the bloodstream that are responsible for inducing sleep.
It is the fact that light plays an important role in controlling the cycle sleep / wake that has led to the increasing use of light therapy to help restore the body clock to counter jet lag and the effects of working for shifts. In fact, a carefully planned program of light therapy before traveling can be done to help prevent jet lag or reduce its effects significantly.
For those suffering from FASPS, because the body is unable to reset the clock in response to light, researchers are seeking ways to avoid this problem, while readjusting the body clock is proving extremely difficult, it is thought to be impossible.
The hope is that eventually researchers will be able to develop a drug that will focus on the specific enzymes responsible for controlling the body's internal clock, and when that happens, not only have a cure for FASPS, but also have a drug that could be used by shift workers and in the prevention of jet lag.
